SNAKEBITE EMERGENCY
Treat every bite as venomous
Act quickly and calmly. Get to a hospital with antivenom — do not wait for symptoms.
First aid — do this now
1. Stay calm & still
Panic speeds venom spread. Keep the person calm and lying down.
2. Immobilise the limb
Keep the bitten limb below heart level. Splint it like a fracture — do not move it.
3. Remove tight items
Take off rings, watches and tight clothing near the bite before swelling begins.
4. Get to hospital fast
Reach the nearest hospital with antivenom immediately. Note the time of the bite.
Do & don't
Reassure the person and keep them still
Note the snake’s appearance / take a photo if safe
Remember the time of the bite
Do NOT cut, suck, or burn the wound
Do NOT apply a tight tourniquet
Do NOT give food, alcohol or aspirin
